Structuring a Well-Written Resume

Whether the applicant is a seasoned senior professional or a fresher who just completed studies, there are three key aspects to a Resume; Structure, content, and design. Each one of them is equally important, even though the content is much more crucial in most cases. But great content, without a clear design and properly structured Resume, might also can go to the dustbin if not given importance.

Structure

This component is usually given more importance since the early ’90s during the days of manual typewriters. Start with personal details, educational qualifications, professional work experience, and interests or hobbies. If you are a fresh graduate, qualifications with any achievements would be crucial. On the other hand for a seasoned professional, starting with a summary followed by recent work experience, duties and responsibilities sound more crucial.

Content

IWith the evolution in technology, applicants required to include achievements, specializations, and key skills as some top companies use keyword searches to shortlist. For a software professional, capabilities and key successful projects are imporntant than their day-to-day responsibilities. While writing clear content, keep as simply as possible leaving out the buzzwords and cliches. These cliches overused in resumes, and according to the recruiters, these buzzwords makes them less interested to shortlist.

Design

Looks easiest of the three components, overdoing results in a disaster. The design element is the one that gives the reader’s eye a pleasant experience when going thru the content. The conventional rules are no longer taken into consideration as long as the Resume does its job, which is not at all wrong. But basic rules of any content are still necessary to consider; the typographical elements such as the font type and size, differentiations between headings and the body text, page or line breaks, line spacing, and the white space.

A Bonus Tip!

With all the above said, it’s not necessary to have all the writing and designing skills in building a good resume, simple and clearly written in Microsoft word or any text editor can do the job to an extent. It is all about improvising but not overdoing. One last tip is before sending any resume or cover letter, or even any official letters, it is always good practice to proofread to avoid any spelling, grammatical or unnecessary errors to the reader.
