Key Points to consider when Building a Resume

Resume writing might look very simple like putting things together. It’s not… Let’s look at how to construct a resume in a structured way. It is best practice to start your resume with a personal introduction or an executive summary.

Resume Introduction

The main section of the page grabs the attention of the recruiter by introducing yourself with a brief summary. Fine-tuning this section is critical in applying for different roles, positions, or even organizations. Additionally, recruiters have different expectations for each position. Based on the job description update accordingly, but be truthful to the changes and do not fake for the sake of getting selected. Be specific about yourself and your achievements, especially about the results. Make the most use of this section about highlighting the capabilities which you are good at but couldn’t contribute to your existing role.

Skills / Expertise Section of a Resume

A section to showcase your skills and specialization required for the job. Most of the applicants are generous in writing their hard skills and generally forget or give the least importance to their soft skills. In a recent study, recruiters are looking for soft and transferable skills, which complement hard skills. Managers spend slightly more time here screening and shortlisting the candidates looking for the required skills for the role.

Achievements / Contributions / Responsibilities

Preferably to concentrate on mentioning your achievements, especially in a measurable manner, your contribution to a specific project or business transformation. More than 40% of the resumes submitted globally do not include past achievements. Current responsibilities carry a huge contribution if involved in cross-departmental activities.

Qualifications / Certifications

For fresh graduates, qualifications appear immediately after the personal introduction at the top. Grades can be included only if they are above average and if not excluding them could be a wise option. Any tertiary certifications which are good as additional qualifications for the position applied or personal development also play a crucial part for fresh graduates. For a working professional, usually educational qualifications can be after the experience section.
